Invite Your Competitors To A Red Carpet, In-Person Tour

Every business should invite their competitors to a red carpet, in-person tour.

When I say “competitors,” I mean the employees of your competitors (even though you don’t really have any competitors – but that is a post for another day).

And I’m serious about that tour.  Here’s why:

Fact (because you are weirdly obsessed with “data”): Median employee tenure with current employer is 4.1 years.

This means that the employees of your competitors – your potential future workforce – will be looking for a job soon.

And because you refuse to get out into the community and network outside of your inner circle to find your next great hire, you have to find another way to meet your future workforce. (You’re not relying on job boards, are you?)

The question to ask yourself is this: Is it better to get to know potential future employees once they become candidates, or beforehand?

If you believe the best way to get to know someone is during a formal interview, when everyone is “performing” and “on” and “stretching the truth about how awesome they are,” then continue as you are doing.

If, however, you believe it’s better to get to know your potential future employees before they become candidates, in a more relaxed and informal manner, then consider inviting your “competitors" to a red carpet, in-person tour of your workplace.  A tour that isn’t centered on a particular job, but instead on getting to know each other.  Because an employment relationship IS A RELATIONSHIP!

Put on your concierge hat and give a tour of your workplace where you can provide an overview of the company, make introductions to current staff, and have a two-way conversation about background, goals, interests, culture, expectations etc.  In doing so, both parties will become more familiar with each other.  And as I’ve said a gazillion times, familiarity reduces uncertainty – for both the employer and candidates.

So, throw open the doors and invite your competitors in.  A 1:1 tour will help both parties to get to know each other - and figure out if it’s a relationship worth pursuing now or in the future.
